The Ghost Town
October, 2024
West Virginia is a coal country and one of the regions where changes in the energy industry dramatically affected the economy and the very existence of communities and towns. Some survived and are adapting to modern life, but many got abandoned and completely disappeared. Thurmond is a rare exception.
By the time the National Park Service took it under its protection, this ghost town still had several citizens and a few surviving buildings. Today, visitors can walk along the railroad, learn the history of the place from the information boards, and see coal trains that are still passing through the town.
